If you’re stuck trying to decide on flight schools in the Seattle area, you should check out Galvin Flying. I just finished my private pilot rating with them, and they did a great job. My job requires travel on a regular basis and I wasn’t sure how I’d complete my rating, however, the instructors and staff at Galvin did everything possible to work with my scheduling needs.
Learning to fly isn’t a cheap endeavor, and I was really concerned that my schedule would interfere with cost savings, but the Galvin staff and my instructor were extremely proactive in helping me get through the rating even while I was away to accomplish it in the most cost effective way.
Like everyone, I did my homework before coming to Galvin and researched and visited other flight schools to determine the best match, but Galvin was the only school that put forth a plan to achieve my goal in a way that I felt was reasonable and efficient. In the end I feel my money was extremely well spent and that I got everything out of the training that I wanted, and then some.
Galvin has a great suite of training aircraft ranging from Cessnas and Diamonds and an equally accomplished suite of flight instructors to work with. Additionally, I found the front desk staff and management great to deal with. The points above are why I am giving Galvin an outstanding rating. The flight training experience is unique unto the individual who is doing it, and as such everyone will have a different opinion of it. However, I will return to Galvin if I choose to pursue further ratings. Yelp, Username: E C
Last summer I decided that after many many years of deliberation it was finally time to get my private pilot license. I’m a researcher at heart and as such started my journey by asking around and talking with relatives in the business. I only plan to get my license once and didn’t want to get caught up in who was the most affordable. Hands down, Galvin consistently came up as the #1 go-to operation in the Seattle area.
I came to Galvin, let them know my goal of being licensed by the following summer, and they took care of it from there. Tactically, the team put me on a schedule that felt aggressive, but ended up being right on target. I was connected with a fantastic instructor – Michael – who’s become a trusted mentor and is someone I know I’ll stay connected with for very long time. Instructors are a bellwether of an operation – and if Galvin can attract and retain people of Michael’s caliber, then there really needn’t be any other questions.
Obviously when it comes to flying, nothing matters more than safety. No concerns here – the operation is run by professionals. Facilities and planes are always in great condition and a joy to fly. Would heartily recommend Galvin to anyone in the Seattle area looking for a great flying education. Yelp, Username: Ryan C
As most organizations typically deal with complaints posted on yelp, about their services, I would like to take the time and post a compliment.
Since January 2015, I have been a paying customer at Galvin Flight Services. I specify paying, because although I am a student, I pay them a great deal of money to advance my credentials. No organization is perfect. However, I’ll illustrate my personal experience with the staff at Galvin.
Customer Service:
Front Desk-
You’ll typically find the desk being operated by Ms. Carly (needs a new iPhone), Mr. Alex (wants to be a Soldier again), Mr. Ruben, or Mr. David. They are fairly prompt in recognizing you as soon as you walk-in. The exception is when they are engaged with another customer, or on the phone.
I have requested supplies; invoices (everyday for two weeks); last minute switch of aircraft; dispatching of an aircraft; donuts; pizza; and the list goes on. The bottom line, I can count on one hand, the number of times I have been denied anything reasonable.
Pilot Support:
Administration-
I will include into the administration, the Chief Flight Instructor (Eric Lynn), Dep. Flight Instructors (Jake and Brian), and Ms. Brandi.
Except for Ms. Brandi and Mr. Jake, I have received Stage Check’s by both Eric and Brian. As a former Senior Enlisted Soldier, I would say unequivocally, they remained professional, direct, and fair (Yes, I even had a NO GO! TWICE!)
Mr. Jake and Ms. Brandi have spent almost an hour in conference, ensuring that my paperwork was in-line; that my career progression was in-line; and answered the most annoying questions, without reserve.
Mr. Brian (another Bike enthusiast) possesses an impressive aviation knowledge base, with the desire to share with those progressing up the ranks (ABBA).
Facilities-
From the time I walk-in, until the time I depart. The facility is clean, odor-free, and possesses a number of offices and terminals for briefings and flight planning. The restrooms are always maintained, and tea and water available.
A Pro-shop is available to purchase pilot material; charts; syllabus; manuals; etc
Pilot Training:
Instructors-
My current instructor is a great match; former military, smart-ass, with a substantial knowledge base. He knows I don’t want to hear “you’re doing good…” He understands me, I understand him!
You can literally find a match for you. There are old”er” instructors (sorry, Chris), and younger instructors…male, female, Asian, Hispanic, “other”….bhahaha [Definitely an EOE].
Equipment:
Aircraft-
Just like any school, they have had issues with aircrafts. Be it mechanical issues (annuals) or availability. Bottom line, no other school in the area possesses the number and different type of aircrafts. I have flown C172’s, both round-dials and G1000. In March, I will advance into the Mooney. If I wanted to fly the Diamonds, I could.
All the aircrafts I have piloted thus far, I would personally own.
Simulators-
I have had the opportunity to fly the Red Bird Flight Simulator. Although I do not personally like simulators, they are sufficient. I have had a few issues with general errors, but they were resolved, or I was refunded for my use. The equipment is maintained and is not rundown.
OVERALL
You can look around at other services. You can call and find a few other places that may be a little cheaper.
“Good training isn’t cheap, and cheap training isn’t good.”
I will be continuing my training through Galvin for another year, until I complete my CFI, CFII, MEI.
It is my pleasure to recommend Galvin Flight Service for training or aircraft rental. Yelp, Username: Anthony W
